TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- The Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology baseball swept team its Sunday doubleheader against Defiance, picking up 8-4 and 10-1 victories. Rose-Hulman improved to 6-5 on the season, while Defiance fell to 4-10.
Game one saw its two major highlights in the first inning, the first being a line-drive home run by
Logan Cody. Later in the inning,
Josh Mesenbrink added a two-run, opposite field home run. Each home run was both Cody's and Mesenbrink's first of the year.
Defiance sparked a late four-run comeback in the eighth inning that fell short, after Rose-Hulman had built an 8-0 lead.
Ben Yoss threw 7.0 innings, totaling a single-game, career-high 10 strikeouts. Yoss improved to a perfect 3-0 on the season. Cody finished 4-5 with a home run and three RBI's. Ernst ended 3-5, and Mesenbrink finished 2-3 with a home run and two RBI's.
Game two started nearly the same way as game one - with Rose-Hulman leading at the end of the first. Two doubles by
AJ Ernst and
Manuel Lopez scored the opening two runs of the game.
Rose-Hulman doubled the lead in the fourth inning. Cody and Ernst drew walks, followed by two singles by
Andy Krajecki and
Colter Couillard-Rodak. Those two singles brought in Cody and Ernst, alongside
Brett Tuttle. The inning was capped by a
Alex Gavrilovich double, scoring Couillard-Rodak.
Brett Tuttle led offensively for Rose-Hulman, finishing 2-5 with 2 runs scored.
Josh Erpenbeck picked up his first pitching win of the season, throwing 5.2 innings and striking out six.
The Fightin' Engineers hit the road for a single, nine-inning contest at Hanover College on Wednesday, March 31. The game will be preceded by finished a suspended game from earlier in the season. First pitch is scheduled for 4pm.
