TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- The 2021 Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology baseball season came to an end with a loss to Bluffton University on Saturday at Art Nehf Field, as the visiting Beavers advanced into the HCAC Tournament by winning a 2-of-3 Opening Round Series.
Bluffton won the series opener 11-10 late Friday night, then advanced into next week's 5-team HCAC Tournament with a 9-7 victory on Saturday.
Bluffton jumped out to a 9-3 lead entering the bottom of the eighth inning, but the Rose-Hulman bats came alive to plate four runs and make the score 9-7.Â
Alex Gavrilovich had an RBI single, and
Harris Camp added a two-run single to spark the rally.
The Fightin' Engineers had the tying run come to the plate in the ninth after
Logan Cody reached first base. Bluffton pitcher Eddie Budinski ended the game with a strikeout to secure the Beavers trip into the HCAC Tournament.
Adam Duncan hit a three-run home run and finished with three runs scored and three RBIs to lead the Bluffton offense. Reid Ruhl added three of Bluffton's 14 hits, and Garrett O'Reilly picked up the pitching win with 7.2 innings of work with seven strikeouts.
The Rose-Hulman offense was highlighted by Camp, who finished 2-4 with a triple, three RBIs and one run scored.Â
Manuel Lopez added two singles, one run and one RBI.Â
Luke Calabrese also had a pair of hits on the day.
Shaine Mitchell scored two runs and
Josh Mesenbrink also had a triple for the Engineers on Saturday.
Rose-Hulman ended the season with a 23-14 record and tied for second place in the HCAC regular season standings with Franklin. Bluffton has an 18-22 record heading into next week's tournament.
