NICHOLASVILLE, Ky. -- Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology has earned a bid to its sixth consecutive NCAA Division III Men's Tennis Tournament after topping Hanover College 5-2 in the league tournament championship match on Sunday.
Rose-Hulman also won its sixth straight HCAC Tournament championship dating back to 2015. The Fightin' Engineers won HCAC Tournament titles and earned NCAA bids in 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019 and now 2021 - with the 2020 year skipped due to the Covid-19 pandemic.Â
Previously undefeated Hanover jumped out to a 2-1 lead after doubles play, but Rose-Hulman roared back with four singles victories to clinch the match win and earn the HCAC Tournament championship. Singles winners included
Joshua Giambattista at No. 1 (6-2, 6-1);
Ian Landwehr at No. 2 (6-2, 6-0);
Rhian Seneviratne at No. 6 (6-1, 6-0); and
Joseph Conrad with the title clinching point at No. 4 (6-1, 6-2).
In doubles play, the No. 1 team of Conrad and
Hart Howard picked up an 8-5 victory. Hanover won at the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles positions.
This will mark the first NCAA Tournament trip for head coach
Dallas Kelsey, who is completely his second year at Rose-Hulman.
The Fightin' Engineers improved to 7-3 on the season and will await word of its NCAA Division III Tournament opponent, site and date of competition that is scheduled for release sometime on Monday afternoon. Hanover completes its season with a 10-1 record.
