TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology picked up its fifth win in the last six games with an 11-3 victory over Illinois Tech on Sunday at Art Nehf Field.
Josh Mesenbrink and Adam Taylor led the Fightin' Engineer offense with three hits each. Mesenbrink had a home run, double and a walk with four RBIs and two runs scored. Taylor had three hits and scored three times.
Colter Couillard-Rodak added two hits, two walks, three runs scored and one RBI. Manuel Lopez and Brett Tuttle added two hits each for the Fightin' Engineer offense.
Brett Borcherding pitched six shutout innings to pick up the win. Borcherding struck out seven and allowed just five hits and one walk.
Josh Erpenbeck and Schuyler Wilcox tossed scoreless innings as part of the effort.
Rose-Hulman improved to 8-4 on the season and hosts Wabash on Tuesday at 6 pm.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Engineers got on the scoreboard first, starting in the third inning. Mesenbrink drove in two runs for Rose-Hulman with a single, that scored Taylor and Couillard-Rodak.
The Hawks failed to push any runs across before the Engineers built on their lead in the fifth inning. Taylor came across to score the lone run of the inning for Rose-Hulman, which brought the score to 3-0 in favor of the Engineers.
Rose-Hulman held Illinois Tech scoreless before expanding their lead to 4-0 the following inning.
The Hawks gained ground, closing the gap to 4-3 until Rose-Hulman added some insurance in the seventh. The Engineers drove home two runs when a single from Kade Kline scored Couillard-Rodak and Mesenbrink, bringing the Rose-Hulman advantage to 6-3.
The Engineers kept Illinois Tech without a run before building on their lead to 11-3 the following inning. The Rose-Hulman offense piled up five runs, highlighted by a two-run home run off the bat of Mesenbrink. The score remained 11-3 for the rest of the game, as the Engineers coasted to the win.
