Mesenbrink Home Runs Lead Rose-Hulman Baseball to Sweep Over Transy

LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology relied on a strong offensive day to sweep Transylvania University 10-4 and 12-8 in a Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference baseball doubleheader on Saturday at the University of Louisville.

Josh Mesenbrink led the offense onslaught with three home runs, two triples and a double in a 6-of-9 performance.  Mesenbrink also tied the Rose-Hulman single-season home run record with his 11th round tripper of the season during the second game.

In the opener, Mesenbrink provided two of his home runs to lead the Rose-Hulman offense in a 10-4 victory.  He finished with three hits, two runs scored and two RBIs in the opener.

Andy Krajecki also had three hits, scored twice and had two RBIs in the opener.  Krajecki provided a double and a triple in the contest.

Manuel Lopez added a triple among two hits with two runs scored and two RBIs.

Other multiple-hit Engineers include Kade Kline with two singles and two runs scored; and Harrison Finch with a single and a double.

The offense was enough for Ian Kline to pick up the win in a strong 8-inning performance.  Kline struck out three and allowed just three runs to improve to 5-1 on the season.

In the nightcap, Mesenbrink finished 3-for-3 with a home run, two triples, three runs scored and two RBIs to lead a balanced offensive attack in a 12-8 win.

Krajecki added a 2-for-3 day with three runs scored, and Brett Tuttle also had two hits with one run scored. 

Drew Roberts provided offensive depth with two RBIs.

On the mound, Schuyler Wilcox allowed one earned run over three innings with three strikeouts to pick up the win.  Five Engineer pitchers combined for seven strikeouts in the performance.

Rose-Hulman improved to 16-7 and 7-3 in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference action, while Transylvania dropped to 10-17 and 4-6 in league play.  Rose-Hulman also has a six-game winning streak with all six wins coming on the road.  The Fightin' Engineers return home on Tuesday to face Franklin College in a 4 pm doubleheader.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Engineers got on the board immediately, starting their scoring with one run in the top of the first inning. Rose-Hulman plated two runs off of Transylvania pitching, one of which was driven in on a run-scoring double off the bat of Colter Couillard-Rodak.

The Engineers then held the Pioneers scoreless before expanding their lead in the third inning. which brought the score to 5-0 in favor of the Engineers.

Transylvania narrowed Rose-Hulman's lead to 5-2 before the Engineers stretched the advantage to 6-2 in the seventh inning.

Rose-Hulman kept the Pioneers without a run before their offense got things rolling the next inning. The Engineers scored once on an RBI single off the bat of Adam Taylor, bringing the Rose-Hulman advantage to 7-2.

Transylvania got within 7-3 until the Engineers scored again in the ninth inning to stretch its lead to 10-3. Transylvania put one run on the scoreboard before the game was over, but the Engineers still coasted to the 10-4 win.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Engineers got on the board immediately, starting their scoring with one run in the top of the first inning. Rose-Hulman's offense started clicking and put up six runs, including a two-run single off the bat of Drew Roberts.

The Pioneers then gained ground, narrowing the lead to 6-2 until the Engineers expanded their advantage in the second. Rose-Hulman picked up a run on Mesenbrink's two-out solo home run off of Matt Armstrong, which brought the Engineers lead to 7-2.

Transylvania narrowed Rose-Hulman's lead to 7-6 before the Engineers stretched the advantage to 8-6 in the fifth inning.

Rose-Hulman held the Pioneers scoreless before their offense got back to their scoring ways the next inning. The Engineers scored three times, picking up one on an RBI base knock off the bat of C. Couillard-Rodak, bringing the Rose-Hulman advantage to 11-6.

Transylvania got within 11-8 until the Engineers scored again in the ninth inning to stretch its lead to 12-8. Rose-Hulman scored once on an RBI single off the bat of Shane Garner. The score remained 12-8 for the rest of the game, as the Engineers coasted to the win.
