DePauw Rallies to Top Rose-Hulman Football 17-14 in Season Opener

GREENCASTLE, Ind. -- Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology took an early 14-3 lead, before DePauw University rallied to claim a 17-14 win in a rematch from the 2021 NCAA Division III Football Playoffs on Saturday.

Rose-Hulman led 7-3 at halftime after a hail mary touchdown on the final play of the first half.  Miguel Robertson connected with Adam Tice-Saliu on a 37-yard touchdown pass into the middle of the endzone to give the Fightin' Engineers the halftime lead.

The Rose-Hulman lead reached 14-3 just one minute into the second half.  Robertson hit Daniel Huery with a crossing pass, and Huery dodged defenders and sprinted the rest of the way for a 73-yard score.  Kyle Rehberg added the extra point and Rose-Hulman led 14-3 with 13:58 left in the third quarter.

DePauw answered with a 31-yard touchdown pass from Wally Renie to Trey Shaw, and a 7-yard touchdown run by Renie to earn the final margin of victory.

The two defenses dominated the first half, with Rose-Hulman snagging an interception and blocking a field goal to highlight the effort.  Tyce Miller hauled in the interception, and Kyzer Bowen recorded the blocked field goal to keep the game scoreless deep into the second quarter.  Chaikou Sow later added a fumble recovery in another forced turnover.

Robertson finished 15-of-28 through the air for 246 yards and two touchdowns for the Fightin' Engineers.  Huery made nine receptions for 148 yards and one score, and Tice-Saliu had three receptions for 69 yards and a touchdown.  Grant Ripperda added 48 rushing yards on 18 carries.

The Rose-Hulman defense held Renie to just 10-of-24 through the air for 130 yards and one score.  Renie crossed the 100-yard mark in rushing with 124 yards and a touchdown, and Gus Baumgartner rushed for 106 yards for DePauw.

Bowen led the Rose-Hulman defense with 14 tackles, 1.5 tackles-for-loss, one sack and the blocked field goal.  Mason Grawe added eight tackles for the Fightin' Engineers.

Rose-Hulman returns to action on Saturday Sept. 10 with the home opener against Trine University at 7 pm.
