TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology took a 2-game lead over 7th place Mount St. Joseph in the race for six HCAC Tournament spots with a 67-57 men's basketball victory over Mount St. Joseph on Saturday at Hulbert Arena.
The Fightin' Engineers relied on a balanced offensive performance and strong defense that allowed just 19 points in the second half to pick up their 10th win of the season.
Max Chaplin led the offense with 17 points.Â
Miles McGowen added a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds.Â
Willie Bowman pitched in with 11 points on a perfect 4-4 and 3-3 from 3-point range.
Other key contributors included
Terry Hicks with 8 points and 9 rebounds;
Kobe Stoudemire with 7 points and 3 assists; and
Isaac Farnsworth with 6 points. Â
Dayne Gardner led the Mount St. Joseph offense with 21 points, and Luke Collinsworth reached double figures with 16 points for the Lions.
Rose-Hulman jumped out to an early 34-19 lead, but Mount St. Joseph strengthened its defense to end the first half on a 19-2 run to take a 38-36 lead into the locker room.
The Fightin' Engineers responded with an 11-3 run that turned a 46-45 deficit into a 56-49 advantage. Bowman scored four points and Farnsworth capped the run with a 3-point shot to make the score 56-49 at the 9:01 mark.
Mount St. Joseph could get no closer than five points the rest of the way as Rose-Hulman secured the win.
Rose-Hulman also conducted its annual Pink Day fundraiser game to support Pink of Terre Haute and their overall cancer support efforts in the Wabash Valley at Saturday afternoon's game.
Rose-Hulman improved to 10-9 overall and 7-5 in HCAC play, while Mount St. Joseph dropped to 6-13 and 5-7 in league games. The Fightin' Engineers return home on Wednesday to face Earlham College at 7:30 pm.
