HANOVER, Ind. -- The Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology silenced the raucous Hanover crowd with a penalty kick win in the HCAC Semifinals. The Fightin' Engineers move to 11-5-3 on the season and advance to the HCAC Championship game on Saturday.
The Fightin' Engineers were on the front foot for the entire first half, applying pressure on both ends of the field.
Owen Trudt got the team on the board first as he hit a rocket past the diving keeper off an assist from
Connor Patton.
After a 1-0 lead at the half, Rose-Hulman came out of the half slow, and the Panthers were able to capitalize. Louan Seveno drove through the Rose-Hulman defense and fired a shot into the back of the net to level the game at one.
Rose-Hulman went on the attack once again at the last 30 minutes of the half, and they had several chances for a game-winner, but the game would go into overtime.
Hanover had a defensive player pick up his second yellow card in the 99th minute, with just over one minute remaining in the first overtime period. Rose-Hulman would take advantage with several chances, but they were unable to put the ball in the back of the net and it would head to a penalty shootout for the second year in a row.
John Biederstedt saved the opening shot for Hanover, and
Julius Salinas found the back of the net to give the Fightin' Engineers an early 1-0 lead.
Hanover would knot it back up, and the Panthers' keeper would make a great save to level it back at 1.
After a pair of penalty kick goals by
Caleb Urban and
Jackson Seida, we would head to sudden death.
Biederstedt came up with another penalty kick save to put the whole game on the foot of
Owen Trudt, the opening goal scorer, and he would deliver one past the diving keeper for the 4-3 penalty kick victory.
With the win, Rose-Hulman moves to the HCAC Championship game for the second straight season. They will travel to Manchester for a 7 PM kickoff on Saturday, November 4.
