PASADENA, Calif. -- The Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology women's basketball team picked up their first win of the 2023-24 season with a 65-54 victory over Caltech on Monday night. The win gives head coach
Devrinn Paul his first career coaching victory.
The Fightin' Engineers used hot shooting from
Ashley Black to build an early lead as she scored 11 first-quarter points.
In the second quarter, it was the Rose-Hulman defense that stepped up as they forced six turnovers and held the Beavers to just 2-12 shooting. They would double up Caltech and take a 42-21 lead in the locker room.
Just like Saturday, the Fightin' Engineers cooled off big time in the second half as they shot just 3-11 with 9 turnovers in the third quarter which allowed Caltech to cut into their lead. However, it was too big of a gap to overcome and Rose-Hulman held on for a 65-54 victory.
Ashley Black led the Fightin' Engineers with 22 points on 4-7 from three.
Grace Roland and
Jamie Baum each finished in double figures for the third straight game with 16 and 15. Roland also recorded her second double double of the season with 11 rebounds.
CK Gallegos-Rodriguez had an outstanding, all-around game with 6 points, 8 rebounds, 5 assists, 3 steals, and 2 blocks.
The win is the first for the Fightin' Engineers in exactly one year after they had to cancel their 2022-23 season just five games in.
Rose-Hulman will return to the court this weekend as they host the Midwest Challenge. The Fightin' Engineers will play Illinois Wesleyan at 2 PM on Saturday, and WashU and DePauw will play the second game at 4 PM. The third-place and championship games will take place at 2 PM and 4 PM on Sunday.
