Men's Basketball Tops Transylvania 71-68, Advances to HCAC Semifinal Round

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology senior Willie Bowman buried a 3-pointer with 21 seconds remaining to put the Fightin' Engineers ahead for good in a 71-68 win over Transylvania University in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Opening Round Game on Sunday at Hulbert Arena.

With Rose-Hulman trailing 68-66, Bowman hit a 3-pointer to put the Fightin' Engineers ahead 69-68.  After a blocked shot from Miles McGowen on the next possession kept Rose-Hulman ahead, Zachary Jackson hit two free throws to put the Engineers up 71-68 with seven seconds left.

Transylvania had a final shot to tie, but a missed 3-pointer at the buzzer proved the difference as Rose-Hulman picked up its 16th win of the season.

Rose-Hulman advances to the HCAC Tournament Semifinal Round at Manchester University on Friday at 7 pm.  The HCAC Championship Game takes place on Saturday at 6 pm at Manchester, with the tournament champion earning an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament.

Max Chaplin led the Fightin' Engineers with 21 points in the contest.  McGowen added 18 points and 9 rebounds on 8-11 from the field. 

The balanced offense included Bradley Harden with 9 points and 7 assists; Bowman with 9 points and 4 rebounds; and Terry Hicks with 7 points and 4 rebounds.

Jaylan Green and Simon Smith paced Transylvania with 15 points each.  Colby Napier scored 12 points and Dakota Capps added 11 for the Pioneers.

Rose-Hulman improved to 16-10 on the season, while Transylvania completed its season at 14-12.
