LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Spalding University relied on timely offense to pick up a 3-1 and 11-3 doubleheader sweep over the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology softball team on Sunday afternoon.
In the opener, Rose-Hulman tied the score at 1-1 on a sacrifice fly by
Nicole Lang that scored
Lexi Fortuna. Spalding scored twice in the sixth to earn the game one win.
MaKenzie Morgan had both hits in game one for Rose-Hulman, and
Phoebe Worstell struck out five in a complete game effort. Michaela Ferman tossed a complete-game two-hitter with 10 strikeouts for Spalding.
In the nightcap, Rose-Hulman led 3-0 before the hosts scored the final 11 runs to secure a doubleheader sweep.
Fortuna led the offense with two singles and one run scored. Morgan and
Katelyn Sarvis each had a single and one run scored, with Sarvis contributing an RBI. Worstell added an RBI to the Rose-Hulman offense.
Ashley Pinkham struck out four in the pitching circle for Rose-Hulman in game two.
Spalding improved to 11-7 on the season, while Rose-Hulman dropped to 6-10. The Fightin' Engineers return to action on Saturday with a home doubleheader against Manchester University.
