RICHMOND, Ind. -- The Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology baseball team was able to salvage a doubleheader split at Earlham with a 7-3 loss in game one before winning the second game 10-9 to snap their losing skid.
In game one, the Fightin' Engineers got on the board early thanks to a Quaker error after a
Kade Kline single. However, Earlham responded with three runs in the third and another in the fifth for a 4-1 lead.
Rose-Hulman was able to add one run in the sixth on a
Peter Rogers single and another run in the ninth with a single by
Andy Krajecki and another Earlham error. However, it wouldn't be enough as the Quakers held on for a 7-3 victory.
Kline led the team with four hits, and Krajecki and Rogers added two each.Â
In the second game, Rose-Hulman once again scored first with an RBI triple by Rogers who then scored on a groundout by
Colter Couillard-Rodak. Rogers brought home another run in the second with an RBI single in the second, and a
Caleb Frakes RBI double made in 4-0 after the third inning.
Earlham was able to tie the game in the fourth inning with four runs on five hits and a single Rose-Hulman error.
However, the Fightin' Engineers battled right back with two runs in the fifth on an RBI single by
Blake Deckard and a sacrifice fly by Kline to put Rose-Hulman back in front 6-4.
The Fightin' Engineers then added three more runs in the sixth with a double by Krajecki and a sacrifice fly by
Caleb Frakes. However, the Quakers came right back with another big inning, scoring five runs to tie the game at nine.
Rose-Hulman once again responded to the big Quaker inning as they retook the lead thanks to a solo home run by Rogers.
The Quakers were threatening in the bottom of the eighth inning with the bases loaded and just one out as they trailed 10-9.
Jonathan Oliger was able to force the Earlham #5 hitter to ground into a 6-4-3 double play to end the threat.
In the ninth, Rose-Hulman opened the inning with a single before Earlham walked five consecutive batters to bring in three runs. After a run scored on a wild pitch, Kline singled home another run, and a Rogers sacrifice fly extended the lead to 16-9. In total, the Fightin' Engineers scored six runs on just three hits and six walks as 12 batters came to the plate as their big inning sealed the win.
Caleb Frakes and
Peter Rogers led the team with four hits in the second game while Frakes added 3 RBIs and Rogers added 4.
Andy Krajecki and
Dalton Busboom scored three runs each to lead the Fightin' Engineers offensive explosion.
Rose-Hulman moved to 18-18 on the season and sit tied for 4th in the HCAC at 10-8, while Earlham moved to 19-15 and are now tied for 6th in the HCAC at 9-9. Rose-Hulman will return to the field next Friday afternoon at Bluffton.
