TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- The Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology women's basketball team dropped a closs one with a 71-65 loss to St. Mary of the Woods in the Crosstown Classic on Friday night.
The Fightin' Engineers opened up the game with a flurry of scoring as the team shot 64.3% in the first half and scored 20 points. They would continue to ramp up their defensive pressure in the second quarter and stretch their lead to the biggest of the game at 35-22 with 2:16 to go in the half.
The Pomeroys would answer with an 11-1 run to cut the lead to three in the third quarter, but Rose-Hulman maintained its lead with a big three by
Julia Meyer to stretch the lead to eight at 41-33.
After that, the turnover bug hit the Fightin' Engineers like a plague as they would turn it over 19 times in the final 20 minutes of action with the Pomeroys scoring 35 points off turnovers in the game.
St. Mary of the Woods took control of the game and stretched the lead to seven with 2:29 to play at 65-58, but the Fightin' Engineers buckled down and battled back with buckets by
Emma Schipp and
Julia Meyer and a big three by
Jamie Baum to cut the lead to one with 31 seconds to play.
After a pair of free throws by the Pomeroys, Rose-Hulman had a shot to tie the game, but they would step out of bounds before getting the shot up and fall 71-65.
Jamie Baum scored 25 points on 7-10 shooting and 4-4 shooting from three. She also added 7 rebounds.
Emma Schipp led the team with 8 rebounds, 5 assists, 2 steals, and one block, and she also scored 12 points.
Julia Meyer was the lone other Fightin' Engineer in double figures with 13 points and 5 boards.
With the loss, Rose-Hulman falls to 0-1 on the season for the third year in a row. The team returns to action on Monday, November 11 as they travel to Decatur, Illinois to take on the Millikin Big Blue.
