Men's Basketball Competes for John Mutchner Cup at Earlham on Tuesday

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- The Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology men's basketball team continues HCAC play, traveling to Earlham College to compete for the John Mutchner Cup on Tuesday, December 17 at 7:30 PM. 

JOHN MUTCHNER CUP:
* Rose-Hulman and Earlham compete for the John Mutchner Cup every year in the first meeting between both teams each season. 
* The trophy is named for former Rose-Hulman men's basketball head coach and athletic director John Mutchner, who was also a standout athlete at Earlham. 
* Mutchner has been inducted into both the Rose-Hulman and Earlham Athletic Hall of Fames. 
* Rose-Hulman leads the series for the John Mutchner Cup, with a record of 20-5. 
* The Fightin' Engineers have won retained the John Mutchner Cup trophy in Terre Haute for 11 consecutive years.

ROSE-HULMAN NOTES:
* Rose-Hulman enters the game with a record of 5-3 overall and an undefeated record of 3-0 in the HCAC. 
* This is just the second 3-0 start in HCAC play in the past 12 seasons for the Fightin' Engineers, with the lone other coming in the 2021-22 season.
* The Fightin' Engineers are tied with Transylvania at the top of the HCAC standings after taking down Manchester, Bluffton, and Anderson to open conference play.
* The team comes off an exciting victory over Anderson after a game-winning buzzer-beater by Simon Blair capped off a 15-2 run in the final four minutes of the came to complete the comeback.
Miles McGowen leads the team, averaging a double-double with 13.1 points per game and 10.8 rebounds per game. He also leads the team with 21 assists on the year.
Joey Schmitz was named the HCAC Player of the Week last week after recording 22 points, 7 assists, 6 steals, and 5 rebounds in the win over Anderson. He is the first Rose-Hulman freshman to be named the conference Player of the Week since Craig McGee in the 2017-18 season.
* Kobe Stoudemire is the lone other Fightin' Engineer averaging double figures with 10.1 points per game and a team-high 21 assists. 
* The Fightin' Engineers were picked to finish fourth in the HCAC preseason coaches poll, receiving 53 poll points.
Miles McGowen earned 2nd-team all-HCAC honors last season after leading the team with 15.8 points and 9.4 rebounds per game.
* After traveling to Earlham, Rose-Hulman will travel to Holland, Michigan for the Glenn Van Wieren Classic at Hope College where they will battle Hope and Olivet on Friday and Saturday.

EARLHAM NOTES:
* Earlham is still seeking their first win of the season with a record of 0-8 overall and 0-3 in the HCAC.
* The team comes off a loss to Mount St. Joseph on Saturday with a final score of 88-72.
* Ken Walker is the standout averaging 21.4 points per game.
* Tavian Tatum leads the team in rebounding with 9.1 rebounds per game and also averages double figures in scoring with 10.5 points per game. 
* Earlham was picked to finish 10th in the HCAC receiving 10 points. 
* After facing Rose-Hulman, Earlham will travel to face Oglethorpe on Friday, December 20 at 2 PM. 

SERIES HISTORY:
* Rose-Hulman leads the all-time series between both teams with a record of 69-55 against the Quakers. 
* The Fightin' Engineers have won their last five games against Earlham dating back to the 2021-22 season.
* Rose-Hulman defeated Earlham in both of their match ups last season with final scores of 72-71 and 81-62. 
* The team has an away record of 20-10 all-time when traveling to face Earlham.
