Rose-Hulman Hall of Fame Coach Robert Bergman Passes Away at Age 84

TERRE HAUTE, Ind.-- The Rose-Hulman athletic community mourns the loss of Hall of Fame football and track and field coach, Robert Bergman. Bergman passed away at the age of 84 in Spring Hill, Florida on Monday, January 29th. 

Bergman led the Fightin' Engineers football and track and field programs from 1968 to 1976 for a total of nine seasons. He amassed a record of 36-44-2 in his time at the helm of the Rose-Hulman football program claiming two conference titles. Five of his nine seasons resulted in records of .500 or above. 

Coach Bergman's best season was during the 1975 campaign when he led the Fightin' Engineers to a 7-3 record with a 4-0 undefeated conference record as a member of the College Athletic Conference. The team was named the Co-CAC champions, sharing the title with Sewanee.

The Fightin' Engineers also won the CAC the previous season in 1974 with a record of 5-3-1 overall and 3-0-1 in the conference. 

On the track, Bergman led the Fightin' Engineers to 27 consecutive meet wins over a three-year period, winning 41 of the team's 46 dual and triangular meets. He was named the NAIA District Track Coach of the Year in 1973, and he led his team to the College Athletic Conference title every year that they competed in the league. 

Coach Bergman was inducted into the Rose-Hulman Athletic Hall of Fame in 1997 for his success and contributions to the Rose-Hulman athletic department.
