Men's Tennis Holds on to Intense 5-4 Match Win at Principia

ELSAH, Ill. -- The Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology brought home a 5-4 victory in an intense and competitive match at Principia on Saturday afternoon.

The Fightin' Engineers opened the match in control early with a 3-0 sweep of doubles after only dropping six total games in the three matches.

The match moved quickly to a 4-1 lead for Rose-Hulman after Principia won at #1 singles and Ervin Perkowski took his match at #4 singles. Those would be the only matches to finish in straight sets as the final four matches would all go the distance at three sets.

The Panthers got the first two points back at #2 and #3 singles as they held on in the final set to cut the lead down to 4-3.

In the final two matches, it would be up to Andrew Leonard and Chris Lian to bring home the victory for the Fightin' Engineers. Lian dropped the first set 6-4, but he battled back to take the second set 7-5. However, he could not pull the match out and dropped the final set 7-5 to even the match out at 4-4.

Leonard won the first set 6-4, but the Panthers came back with a 6-4 win in the second set. However, Leonard would come up clutch with a 6-2 win in the final set to put the Fightin' Engineers on top with a 5-4 victory on the road.

Rose-Hulman improves to 9-4 overall on the season with the 5-4 victory. They will return to action on Wednesday afternoon as they travel to Earlham to take on the Quakers in an HCAC contest.
