TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- The Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology has named Shane Mills as its next head men's and women's track and field coach for the upcoming 2024-25 season.
"I would like to express my sincere gratitude to President Rob Coons, Athletic Director Ayanna Tweedy, and the search committee for this incredible opportunity. The welcoming environment, dedicated people, and outstanding students immediately impressed me from the moment I set foot on campus. Rose-Hulman is a place for high achievers, and I am thrilled to join a team that is committed to excellence. I am excited to recruit and coach talented young men and women from around the world at an institution like Rose-Hulman. I am deeply thankful for this chance to be part of the athletic department and the Terre Haute community," said Coach Mills.
Mills becomes just the 3rd track and field head coach at Rose-Hulman since 1987, joining Rose-Hulman Athletic Hall of Famer Bill Welch and former coach Larry Cole who coached the program for 17 and 21 years respectively.
"We are so excited to have Coach Shane Mills join the Rose-Hulman family. His energy to serve, level of engagement and thoughts on enhancing the student-athlete experience will help us continue to lead with success and legacy for our men's and women's track and field team!," said Ayanna Tweedy, the Rose-Hulman Athletic Director.
Mills started his coaching career as an assistant coach at Earlham College under current Rose-Hulman cross country head coach, Derick Lawrence. He would be named the interim head coach of the program in 2021-22 before being named the Director of Cross Country and Track and Field in the summer of 2022.
Coach Shane Mills takes over a Rose-Hulman track and field program that has experience long-lived success with 36 HCAC Championships in the last 17 years including 6 of the 8 available titles in the last two seasons.
Mills graduated from Albion College in 2019 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in History and Educational Studies where he ran cross country and track and field for Coach Lawrence. He also completed his Master's degree in 2023 from Earlham College in Educational Leadership and Administration.
