Football Hosts Trine in Home Opener on Saturday

GAME NOTES

TERRE HAUTE, Ind.-- The Rose-Hulman Fightin' Engineers football team welcomes Trine University to campus for their home opener on Saturday, September 14 at 7 PM.

ROSE-HULMAN NOTES:
* The Fightin' Engineers stand at 0-1 after falling in their season opener to DePauw last Saturday.
* Kolton Nanko was the standout for Rose-Hulman in their first game totaling seven catches for 112 receiving yards and one touchdown.
* Jay Smith was also productive finishing the game with 103 rushing yards. 
* Rose-Hulman has been selected to finish third in the HCAC preseason poll receiving 25 points.
* The team finished last season with a record of 7-3 overall and 6-1 in the HCAC.
* The Fightin' Engineers finished second in the HCAC after falling to Mount St. Joseph in the final game of the season.
* The squad returns eight All-Conference student-athletes from last year's team including Wyatt Bell, Cameron Dorsey, Adam Field, Daniel Huery, Ben Klein, Dylan Page, Kyle Rehberg, and Andrew Toler.
* All of the returning All-Conference players with additions of Rick Easterwood, Augustus Shryock, and Jay Smith have been named as Players to Watch by the HCAC this season.
* Senior Punter Andrew Toler has been named a 1st Team Preseason All-American by D3football.com.
* Toler earned a pair of All-American honors last season ranking third in all of Division III with an average of 44.4 yards per punt last season. 
* He also enters his final season ranked second in school history in career yards per punt at 39.71. 
* Jay Smith is the team's top returner in the backfield ranking second on last year's team with 614 total rushing yards with nine touchdowns averaging 68.22 yards rushing per game. 
* Daniel Huery is the top returning wide receiver for the Fightin' Engineers finishing last season with 66 catches for 709 yards and six touchdowns. 
* Linebacker Marshall Koch is a standout returner for the Rose-Hulman defense ranking second on the team last season with 67.0 total tackles, 8.5 tackles for loss, 2.0 sacks, one interception, and two fumble recoveries. 
* Adam Field leads the secondary as the top returning defensive back ranking third on the team last season with 63.0 total tackles, two interceptions, and six pass breakups.  
* Jeff Sokol is serving in his 14th year at Rose-Hulman with a career record of 84-43. Sokol has led Rose-Hulman to three HCAC titles and two NCAA Playoff appearances in 2016 and 2021.
* After hosting Trine, Rose-Hulman will host Hope for Tackle Childhood Cancer Night on Saturday, September 21 at 1:30 PM. 

TRINE NOTES:
* Trine also enters the match up with Rose-Hulman with an 0-1 record to start the year. 
* The team suffered a loss to Chris. Newport in their home opener with a final score of 42-6. 
* Cole Alexander led the team in their first game of the season going 21-33 with 231 yards passing and one passing touchdown. 
* Owen Hebberd made an impact finishing the game with eight catches for 82 yards. 
* The Thunder have been selected to finish third in the MIAA preseason poll after finishing last season with a record of 6-4 overall and 4-2 in conference.
* The team lost eight of their 2023 All-MIAA selections from last season, but returned linebacker Tucker Hasselman who received 2nd Team All-MIAA last year. 
* Head Coach Troy Abbs holds a career record of 61-28 entering his 10th season with the Trine Thunder. 
* After facing the Fightin' Engineers, Trine will travel to face Bluffton on Saturday, September 21 at 7 PM. 

SERIES HISTORY:
* Rose-Hulman leads the all-time series between both teams with a record of 2-1 against Trine.
* Rose-Hulman topped the Thunder in the 2021 season with a final score of 31-30 and defeated Trine last year 30-28.
* Trine picked up the win during the 2022 season with a final score of 24-23.
* The Fightin' Engineers are 0-1 when hosting Trine.

* Cameron Dorsey - 4th in pass breakups (27), 13th in fumble return yards (9)
* Jacob Fields - One of seven players in Rose-Hulman history to return a fumble for a touchdown, and 8th in fumble return yards (19)
