Transylvania Takes Down Rose-Hulman in Five Set Series

Box Score TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – The Fightin' Engineers opened the HCAC season against Transylvania, where the Pioneers bested Rose-Hulman 3-2 in a very competitive match.
 
Rose-Hulman opened set one with an early 5-1 lead, which was highlighted by Emma Blanton recording an ace. The Fightin' Engineers continued to thrive in set one, taking a 12-7 lead halfway through.
 
They would then score six consecutive points, where Aurora Schmidt recorded three straight service aces, while Blanton added a pair of kills to extend the lead to 18-7.
 
The Pioneers were able to cut into Rose's lead, where they found themselves trailing by just one point with a score of 23-22. Schmidt would respond by recording a kill, and Blanton would seal set one with a kill of her own, giving RHIT a 25-22 win in set one.
 
Transylvania was able to tie the series in set two, winning by a score of 25-13. Greta Carlson accumulated a set-high four kills for RHIT, while Schmidt and Blanton added two.
 
The Pioneers would then take a 2-1 lead in set three, recording a 25-15 win. Rose-Hulman would score four straight points early in the set, with Keira Ohse recording two service aces and a kill.
 
Rose-Hulman jumped to an early 3-0 lead in set four, with Greta Carlson recording two kills, and she would add two more later in the set to give RHIT a 15-13 lead.
 
With the Fightin' Engineers down 22-19, Blanton added another kill, before RHIT would tie the game on a pair of attacking errors. Following a point from the Pioneers, Carlson recorded a kill and a Blanton service ace put Rose-Hulman ahead 24-23.
 
Both teams continued to trade points, as the score would be tied at 24, 25, and 26 apiece.
 
With Rose-Hulman down 27-26, Hannah Bergfeld accumulated a kill, which was followed by a kill from Blanton. Transylvania would then record an attacking error, giving Rose-Hulman the comeback win by a score of 29-27.
 
Transylvania jumped to an early 4-0 lead in set five, and they were able to extend the lead to 11-6 late in the set. Both Bergfeld and Ohse added kills, but the Pioneers were able to take set five by a score of 15-8, to conclude the match with a 3-2 score.
 
Greta Carlson recorded a team-high 17 kills on the day, while adding two blocks.
 
Emma Blanton recorded 13 kills and 13 digs, while picking up two service aces.
 
Aurora Schmidt and Keira Ohse each added seven kills, while Schmidt recorded a team-high three service aces while Ohse added two.
 
Julia Irmen added 43 assists for Rose-Hulman, while Lily Ebright recorded 39 digs.
 
The Fightin' Engineers will face Greenville in their final nonconference game of the season on Wednesday, October 8, at 6 PM central time.
