TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- The Rose-Hulman men's basketball team took down Manchester in their home opener to earn a win in their first conference game of the season with a score of 95-72. This advances the team to 3-2 overall and 1-0 in the HCAC.
Rose-Hulman totaled six players with double figures in the big win.
Joey Schmitz led the way with 20 points on 8-12 shooting from the field and four steals on the night.
Evan Gentile was another standout with a career-high 16 points on 7-9 shooting from the floor.
Other double-figure scorers included
Cole Pride with 12,
Will McElheney with 11,
Daniel Savovic with 11, and
Christian Torres with 10. Torres was the team's leading rebounder with nine, and
Cole Pride protected the rim with an impressive four blocked shots.
The Fightin' Engineers set the tone early with back-to-back three-pointers by Schmitz to start the game. The team outscored the Spartans 31-10 in the first 10 minutes of play. A made layup by Torres off an offensive rebound made the score 48-30 heading into the halftime break.
Rose-Hulman continued to dominate the Spartans in the second half, holding onto the lead for the entire contest. A steal and fast break layup by
Jackson Kochalka in the final two minutes gave the Fightin' Engineers their largest lead of the night at 93-66.
The team finished the game out-rebounding the Spartans 35-28 and shooting 57.58% as a team from the field.
Rose-Hulman will continue conference play, hosting Bluffton on Saturday, December 6, at 4 PM.
