TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- The Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology women's swimming and diving team brought home a third place finish in the meet with their second-most points scored in the HCAC meet in program history. The Fightin' Engineers broke five school records and tallied eight HCAC Championships in their third-place finish.
Avery Witt received special recognition from the HCAC, being named the Newcomer of the Year in the championship meet with three relay wins and a trio of top-3 finishes. This is the second time in HCAC history that a Fightin' Engineer has won the HCAC Newcomer of the Year, joining Elisa Weber in 2018.
The Fightin' Engineers opened the championship meet with a bang on Wednesday night as the 800 Freestyle Relay team of
Cate Stauffer,
Avery Witt,
Ritu Bharamaraddi, and
Catherine Bath combined to break the school record with a time of 7:55.42, breaking the record that had stood since 2018 and swimming just the second sub-8 minute time in school history.
Catherine Bath and
Cate Stauffer each took home HCAC titles in their first individual events of the meet on Friday night. Bath won the 500 Freestyle by over five seconds with a time of 5:10.09, and Stauffer took home the 200 IM title with a time of 2:09.10.
Rose-Hulman capped off the night by taking home the 400 Medley Relay title for the first time in HCAC history with the second-fastest time in school history at 4:03.15. The 400 Medley Relay team included
Ritu Bharamaraddi,
Cate Stauffer,
Catherine Bath, and
Avery Witt.
The Fightin' Engineers' freshman duo of
Ritu Bharamaraddi and
Avery Witt each made their way into the record book on Friday morning in the 100 Backstroke as Witt swam the second-fastest time in school history with a 59.16, and Bharamaraddi added the third-fastest time in school history with a 59.80.
Also on Friday morning,
Cate Stauffer added the second school record of the meet as she swam a 1:06.68 in the 100 Breaststroke to take down Lauren Blake's 2018 record by over a second. Then, in the evening session, Stauffer then took down her second school record of the meet in the 400 IM as she won her fifth HCAC Championship by over 13 seconds with a school record time of 4:33.91.
Rose-Hulman also opened the Friday evening session with their third relay title of the meet as they won the 200 Medley Relay with a time of 1:50.88 that ranks second in Rose-Hulman history. The 200 Medley Relay team included
Ritu Bharamaraddi,
Cate Stauffer,
Catherine Bath, and
Avery Witt.
On Saturday morning, the Fightin' Engineers added yet another school record by
Cate Stauffer in the 200 Breaststroke with a time of 2;25.58 in the preliminary round, and she broke the record a second time on Saturday night with a time of 2:24.03 en route to another HCAC title.
Ritu Bharamaraddi and
Avery Witt each found their way into the record book in the 200 Backstroke with times of 2:10.37 and 2:11.69 which rank 2nd and 5th in HCAC history.
Rose-Hulman capped off the meet on Saturday night with another school record as
Cate Stauffer broke her FIFTH school record of the meet on the opening leg of the 400 Freestyle Relay as she swam a 53.27 in the 100 Freestyle.
