LEXINGTON, Ky. -- The Rose-Hulman softball team traveled to face Transylvania to open HCAC play on Saturday. The team suffered two losses to the Pioneers with final scores of 8-1 and 6-4. This drops Rose-Hulman to 6-8 overall and 0-2 in the HCAC.
In the first game of the doubleheader, Rose-Hulman got on the board first in the second inning after a double by
Caledonia Coleman brought in a run by
Katelyn Sarvis.
Transylvania answered with two runs in the second to take back the lead. The Pioneers continued to shine offensively, adding another run in the fourth and five runs in the fifth to claim the win in game one.
Aubrey Smith led the team in the circle with 4.2 innings pitched and five strikeouts.
Jessica Newsom led the team in the second game of the day, going 3-4 at the plate with two runs scored and 1 RBI.
Newsom scored a run in the first inning to give Rose-Hulman the lead 1-0. The Pioneers answered with 6 unanswered runs in the fourth and sixth innings to stand ahead 6-1.
The Fightin' Engineers put up a fight, scoring three runs in the top of the seventh to make the score 6-4. The lead proved to be too much to overcome as Transylvania would complete the sweep.
Phoebe Worstell represented the team in the circle, pitching the entire 6.0 innings with four strikeouts.
The Rose-Hulman softball team will return home to continue HCAC play, hosting Berea in their home opener on Saturday, April 5, at 1 PM and 3 PM.
