LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- The Rose-Hulman baseball team traveled to compete in the Derby City Classic this weekend, taking on some of the top teams in the national. The Fightin' Engineers dropped both games of their doubleheader, falling to (RV) Spalding 7-6 and #4 Denison 15-3. This moves the team to 2-5 overall this season.
In the first game against Spalding, Rose-Hulman got off to a strong start. A run in the top of the second and a two-run home run by
Connor O'Connell put the Fightin' Engineers in front 3-0 to start the game.
Spalding answered with two runs in the fifth inning before
Mark Serdinak hit a solo homer in the sixth to make the score 4-2. A double by
Peter Rogers brought in two more runs to extend the Rose-Hulman lead to 6-2 in the sixth.
The Golden Eagles tied the game after four unanswered runs heading into the eighth inning. Spalding homered in the top of the eighth to take their first lead of the game. The Fightin' Engineers were unable to answer and would suffer the comeback loss.
Brady Strawmyer had a quality start at the mound pitching 5.0 innings with seven strikeouts.
Jonathan Oliger would suffer the loss, pitching the final inning with one strikeout.
Rose-Hulman battled the #4 team in the country in the second game of their doubleheader. After Denison took the 1-0 lead in the first, Rose-Hulman answered with a three-run bomb by Serdinak to make it a 3-1 game.
Denison tied the game with two runs in the third to make the score 3-3. The Big Red took a commanding lead after putting up four runs in the top of the fourth to make the score 7-3.
Denison continued to shine offensively adding another run in the sixth and seven more runs in the seventh to defeat the Fightin' Engineers after eight innings.
Camden Judson was credited the loss at the mound for Rose-Hulman pitching 3.1 innings with five strikeouts.
The Fightin' Engineers will return to action tomorrow to face (RV) Spalding to wrap up the weekend on Sunday, March 9, at 3:30 PM.
