Rose-Hulman Beats Down the Big Blue in Shutout Victory

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – The Fightin' Engineers record their most dominant victory of the season, taking down the Millikin Big Blue 5-0.

Rose-Hulman got off to a hot start with junior Chase Kedzior recording a shot in goal in the 6th minute, which was deflected away on a diving save. The Fightin' Engineers would add another shot four minutes later, where sophomore Cameron Hannah's strike found the back of the net on an assist from sophomore Nick Phillips.

Kedzior pulled off another amazing play in the 17th minute, dribbling past Millikin's entire defense in the 17th where his shot down the middle was saved. He added his third shot on goal of the game a minute later, which was once again deflected away on a diving save.

Rose-Hulman extended their lead to 2-0 in the 25th, as junior Oliver Fila launched a shot from way outside the box into the goal. Both he and sophomore Ryan Shapiro each recorded shots on goal two minutes later, but they would both be deflected away by goalkeeper Christian Smith.

The Fightin' Engineers would have a great opportunity to extend their lead to three, as sophomore Landon Kangas made a perfect pass deep inside the box. His pass connected with Hannah, whose shot from point-blank range was hit away.

Freshman Justin Burns closed out the half with his first save of the match in the 41st minute. RHIT went into the break with a 2-0 lead, where they outshot Millikin 14-5 and did not give up a single corner kick.

The Fightin' Engineers continued to thrive at the start of the second half. In the 51st minute, Rose-Hulman found themselves on the fast break with Shapiro making a pass to freshman Pace Morel, who dished the ball back to Shapiro. Shapiro then crossed a lob towards the goal, which connected with senior Weston Seybold, whose diving header sailed into the goal. Seybold's goal gave Rose-Hulman a 3-0 lead with both Shapiro and Morel recording the assists.

Shapiro would later make a great defensive play in the 58th minute, where he stole the ball from behind, before firing a shot that just sailed over the net. Ten minutes later, Morel found himself on the fast break once again, where he drew a foul inside the box to give RHIT a penalty kick.

Shapiro stepped up to the box and launched his shot into the back of the net to extend Rose-Hulman's lead to four. With the goal, Shapiro became the first Fightin' Engineer to score three goals on the season, as he has scored all three goals in the past four games.

Burns added another save in the 72nd minute, where he made a phenomenal diving deflection to maintain his clean sheet. Ten minutes later, Rose-Hulman had an opportunity to extend their lead with sophomore Carson Manes recording a shot on goal that beat the Millikin goalkeeper but would be headed away right in front of the goal by the Big Blue defense.

The Fightin' Engineers responded three minutes later, as sophomore Cameron Hannah recorded Rose-Hulman's fifth goal of the match on a dump-off pass from sophomore Eli Miller. Hannah has also scored three goals on the season, while becoming the first Fightin' Engineer to score two goals in a game.

Burns recorded his fourth and final save in the 87th, sealing his third shutout of the year in Rose-Hulman's 5-0 victory. The Fightin' Engineers concluded the game with a season-high 25 shots for 12 shots on goal, as RHIT improved to 4-2 overall.

Rose-Hulman will play in their fifth consecutive home game against in-city rivals St. Mary-of-the-Woods Pomeroys. The match will take place on Tuesday, September 16, at 7 PM.
