TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Rose-Hulman concluded their homestand in victorious fashion, taking down in-city rivals St. Mary-of-the-Woods Pomeroys 3-1.
Junior
Chase Kedzior recorded Rose-Hulman's first shot on target, where he dribbled past two Pomeroy defenders and fired a shot that was deflected away. One minute later in the 13
th, St. Mary-of-the-Woods found themselves on a two-on-one fastbreak, but they were denied by sophomore
Eli Miller, who made a phenomenal diving tackle.
In the 24
th minute, Rose-Hulman was awarded a corner kick following an aggressive attack. Junior
Oliver Fila took the corner, and his pass connected with Kedzior. Kedzior then headed a pass to senior
Aidan Kriek, who fired a strike past the Pomeroy keeper into the back of the net. Kriek's goal gave the Fightin' Engineers an early 1-0 lead, with Kedzior and Fila picking up the assists.
Ten minutes later, senior
William Wittich nearly extended RHIT's lead as he fired a shot from the top of the box that was deflected away on a diving save.
The Fightin' Engineers would conclude the half up one, while outshooting St. Mary-of-the-Woods 7-0.
Coming off his second HCAC Defensive Player of the Week Award, freshman
Justin Burns recorded his first save of the game on a diving deflection in the 53
rd minute.
Four minutes later, freshman
Pace Morel attempted a shot on target that deflected off the top of the post. The ball would land in front of the goal, where it would be kicked into the goal by sophomore
Evan Lipsky, extending Rose's lead to two.
The Pomeroys would quickly bounce back, as Luca Janzen's long downfield pass connected with Jaime Gayol. Gayol took one dribble into the box and recorded a goal to make it a 2-1 game in the 61
st minute.
Sophomore
Carson Manes recorded a shot on goal for the Fightin' Engineers one minute later, which came on a perfect pass from Miller. RHIT would add consecutive shots in the 65
th minute as well, but they were denied by the Pomeroy defense.
Burns hauled in another save in the 69
th minute, and he recorded his final save from point-blank range in the 85
th minute, diving on top of St. Mary-of-the-Woods' shot to keep Rose-Hulman in the lead.
With one minute remaining, Kedzior juked out the Pomeroy's keeper, making him dive early. Kedzior would then take one dribble before scoring the final goal of the game to secure the 3-1 Rose-Hulman victory.
Kedzior and Wittich both finished the match with a team-high three shots on goal, while Burns matched his season-high with five saves.
The Fightin' Engineers will look to make it three wins in a row as they face Ohio Northern in Ada, Ohio, Saturday, September 20, at 4 PM.
