Franklin Fends Off Rose-Hulman at Hulbert Arena

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – The Fightin' Engineers fought hard against the Franklin Grizzlies but came up short by a score of 79-67.
 
Rose-Hulman got off to a hot start, as they scored seven straight points, highlighted by a three-pointer and a layup from CK Gallegos Rodriguez.
 
Katelyn Fennell would add a two-point jump shot, but the Grizzlies were able to go on an 8-0 run of their own to jump into the lead. The lead did not last long as Anaya Hawkins scored a layup, and the Grizzlies were able to score on three-straight shots in the paint, closing out the quarter up 19-13.
 
Sophia Reese led off the second quarter by immediately cashing a three-point basket. María Godoy Rodriguez added a jumping deflection steal, and she assisted on Emma Schipp's fast break layup, which cut the lead to 19-18, forcing Franklin to call a timeout.
 
Late in the second quarter, Reese was able to fight through contact, scoring on an and-one layup. Fennell would knock down a three-pointer off a Reese assist two possessions later, and Schipp was able to cut the lead to 29-28 as she scored on a contested layup.
 
The Grizzlies were able to add a pair of fast-break layups, and María Godoy Rodriguez hit a mid-range jumper right before the half, concluding the score with RHIT down 33-30.
 
Reese would also open the third quarter by swishing a three pointer. Fennell would add three of her own two possessions later, as Rose-Hulman tied the game at 36 apiece.
 
Franklin would continue to find success in the paint, where they were able to score three straight baskets. Fennell added her third bucket from beyond the arc to keep Rose-Hulman in the game, before the Grizzlies concluded the quarter on a 6-0 run to take a 52-41 lead.
 
The fourth quarter would be very high-scoring as both teams scored six points in the first one minute and 15 seconds. Fennell would then score on another layup, and a steal and assist from María Godoy Rodriguez resulted in another fastbreak layup from Schipp to make it a 62-51 game.
 
Following a pair of Fennell free throws, the Grizzlies scored seven straight fastbreak points, where they were able to jump to an 18-point lead.
 
Kaia Peterson was able to thrive at the basket, as she scored three straight layups. Gallegos Rodriguez scored a layup off a beautiful assist from Anaya Hawkins with one minute left in the game. She would add another layup right before the buzzer, as Franklin secured the win by a score of 79-67.
 
Katelyn Fennell dropped a team-high 19 points, shooting 7-13 from the floor, 3-6 from three, and 2-2 at the free throw line. She hauled in seven rebounds with two coming on the offensive end.
 
Sophia Reese scored 13 points, and she added five rebounds and a team-best five assists.
 
CK Gallegos Rodriguez posted a double-double with 11 points on 4-9 shooting and 12 rebounds, which are the most boards by a Rose-Hulman player this season. She dished out two assists, recorded two steals, and blocked two shots.
 
Emma Schipp put up eight points, four rebounds, and four assists on 4-11 shooting.
 
María Godoy Rodriguez scored six points on 3-6 shooting. She added three assists and accumulated a game-high five steals.
 
Rose-Hulman will continue the season on the road against the Manchester Spartans. The game will take place on Wednesday, January 21, at 7:30 PM.
