BEREA, Ky. – The Fightin' Engineers were unable to take down Berea, as the Mountaineers recorded a 68-51 win.
The Mountaineers immediately took over the game as they recorded a 12-0 run across the opening four minutes.
Kaia Peterson knocked down a pair of free throws, and
Katelyn Fennell scored on a two-point jumper.
Berea was able to extend their lead to 17 late in the first, but
Anaya Hawkins hit a turn around jumper right before the buzzer as RHIT concluded the quarter down 23-8.
Sophia Reese opened the quarter by scoring on a floater, and she added a pair of free throws on the following possession. Midway through the quarter, the Fightin' Engineers went on a 6-0 run, with Fennell,
Reagan Lorenzen, and CK Gallegos each recording baskets in the paint. This run helped Rose-Hulman cut the lead to single digits, as they now trailed 27-20.
María Godoy Rodriguez would later pick up a steal before assisting on Peterson's fast-break layup. Reese scored on a mid-range jumper with less than a minute in the half, where the Fightin' Engineers were able to conclude the half, down by a score of 34-24.
Fennell immediately cashed a three-pointer to start the second half. Both teams would trade baskets, and Fennell was able to add a pull-up jump shot to keep Rose-Hulman in the game.
Following a pair of Berea free throws, Reese cut to the hoop and swished a midrange two-pointer. Gallegos Rodriguez and Fennell each added layups, as Rose-Hulman wrapped up the quarter down by a score of 46-39.
Schipp scored on a two-pointer early in the fourth, before Berea responded with back-to-back layups. Fennell would later swish another three-pointer from the elbow, as RHIT was able to make it an eight-point game.
Berea's defensive presence was able to keep the Fightin' Engineers off the board for the next four minutes as they extended their lead to 18.
María Godoy Rodriguez scored on a catch-and-shoot mid-range off an inbound play, and Fennell added a two-pointer off
Julia Meyer's offensive rebound.
Following Fennell's bucket, Berea was able to run out the clock as the Mountaineers picked up the 68-51 win.
Katelyn Fennell recorded team-highs with 18 points, six rebounds, and three assists. She shot 7-12 from the floor, while adding one steal and one block.
Sophia Reese scored ten points on 4-8 shooting.
Kaia Peterson added nine points, four rebounds, one block, and one steal.
The Fightin' Engineers will continue their season against the Franklin Grizzlies on Wednesday, January 28, at 7 PM.
