TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Rose-Hulman dropped two games to start their series against Chicago. The Maroons won game one by a score of 12-5 and game two 7-6.
Game One
Chicago would outscore Rose-Hulman 12-5 in game one, but the Fightin' Engineers posted ten hits to nine from the Maroons.
Rose-Hulman would find success in the second, as sophomore
Jackson Harms led off the inning by launching a home run over the left field wall. Sophomore
TJ Pipkins followed that up by hitting a line drive double to right center field.
Senior
Mason Rasmussen gave the Fightin' Engineers their second run of the day with an RBI single to left field, where Pipkins slid into home to beat out the throw.
After missing the last game due to injury, freshman
Michael Hines would not miss a step, as he hit a fifth inning double off the left field wall.
Freshman
Matthew Furtado added another Fightin' Engineers double, which he hit out to left center field to lead off the bottom of the seventh. With two runners on, junior
Jackson Summers picked up an RBI single on a grounder past third base, bringing Furtado home. With the bases loaded and one out, sophomore
Noah Rasmussen also scored on a sacrifice fly from senior
Connor O'Connell.
The Fightin' Engineers would add multiple defensive highlights, as Pipkins hauled in a diving catch atop the second inning, and O'Connell snagged a hard grounder on the dive, where he threw the runner out at first while leaving Chicago's other runner stranded at third.
Sophomore
Alex Powers pitched 2.2 innings for the Fightin' Engineers where he allowed no hits and no runs, without walking a single batter. He subbed in with the bases loaded in the sixth, and he forced back-to-back fly outs to close out the inning.
Game Two
The Maroons would add a 7-6 victory in game two as the Fightin' Engineers comeback came up just short.
The Fightin' Engineers scored their first run in the bottom of the first as Harms hit a stand up double off the right field wall, which brought Pipkins home. Summers would record a solo home run on a full count two innings later, as his hit sailed over the left field wall.
The Fightin' Engineers added two more hits in the fourth, with O'Connell recording a single to shallow left field, while N. Rasmussen hit a double right next to the right field foul line.
The Fightin' Engineers were able to cut the lead to two in the sixth, as freshman
Connor Smith was walked with the bases loaded. They added another run to reduce the deficit to 5-4 in the seventh, as Summers scored on a double play with the bases loaded.
On the mound, senior
Tyler Orr struck out three batters at the top of the ninth, who all went down swinging. He finished the game with six strikeouts on four innings pitched, while giving up just one earned run.
With one out and a runner on in the bottom of the ninth, sophomore Issei Takahaski smacked a double to deep left field, where Summers scored to make it a 7-5 game. With two outs and the bases loaded, O'Connell hit another sacrifice fly out to right field, where Takahashi scored on the play. With runners on first and second, Chicago was also to force a ground out to shortstop, as they snuck by with a 7-6 win.
The Fightin' Engineers will wrap-up their series with Chicago, tomorrow Sunday, March 15 at 12 PM.
