Rose-Hulman Takes Down the Sabres in High-Scoring Thriller

ORLANDO, Fla. – Rose-Hulman improved to 4-0 on the season as they took down the Marian Sabres by a score of 9-8.

Junior Jackson Summers started the game with a single to center field, and he advanced to third on a single to right field by freshman Michael Hines. Senior Connor O'Connell brought Summers home with a sacrifice fly to center field as Rose-Hulman continued their trend of scoring in the first inning.

Rose-Hulman would later load the bases following a pair of walks. With two outs, senior Mason Rasmussen recorded an RBI to second as Hines scored, and Harms would also score off a Marian error to give the Fightin' Engineers a 3-0 lead.

Sophomore Liam Richardson posted a three-up, three-down inning at the bottom of the first, and the Fightin' Engineers' defense would record a double play in the following inning.

Hines picked up another hit to lead off the third, as he recorded a single to second base. Hines would later advance to third following a lineout to deep right field, and he extended Rose-Hulman's lead to four off an RBI sacrifice fly from sophomore TJ Pipkins.

The Sabres hit a single to open the bottom of the third, and they scored their first run of the game on an RHIT error. Arjay Valdez would then add a triple, and he scored on a sacrifice fly to cut the lead to 4-2.

Sophomore Joe Nevle led off the fourth with a grounder to third, and he was able to use his speed to beat out the throw for a single. Nevle advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt, stole third, and scored Rose's fifth run of the game on a throwing error from the catcher.

Hines started the game hitting a perfect 3-3, as he singled on a bunt to the left side. Hines would successfully steal second, and he scored on an RBI double to the left-center field wall from O'Connell.

Richardson struck out another batter at the bottom of the fourth, and he finished the game with three total strikeouts.

The Sabres were able to cut the lead to 6-5, as they put together a three-run inning in the fifth. They scored on a walk with the bases loaded and added a two-RBI double to center field with two outs.

Freshman Jack Reeves would record three-up, three-down innings of his own in both the sixth and seventh, while striking out three batters. He added another strikeout early in the eighth inning, before a pair of Rose-Hulman errors allowed Marian to tie the game at 6-apiece on an unearned run.

The Fightin' Engineers loaded the bases with one out atop the ninth, as Summers was walked, O'Connell hit a single out to left field, and sophomore Issei Takahashi was also walked.

Pipkins hit the go-ahead run on a single to shortstop as RHIT took back the lead by a score of 7-6. M. Rasmussen's keen eye resulted in a walk with the bases loaded to bring O'Connell home, and Takahashi would score on an RBI to second base from sophomore Sam Erickson.

With Rose-Hulman up 9-6, Jason Sims hit a solo homer over the left field wall to cut the lead to two in the bottom of the ninth. Reeves struck out the next batter, but Marian responded with a single before scoring on an error.

With a one-run lead and runners on second and third, Reeves showcased that he has ice in his veins, as he struck out the final batter swinging to secure the thrilling 9-8 victory for the Fightin' Engineers.

Rose-Hulman will return to Chain O'Lakes Field 2 as they take on the Saint Mary's Cardinals. The game will be held on Tuesday, March 3, at 11:30 AM.
