BEREA, Ky. – Rose-Hulman scored a total of 37 runs in their double header sweep of Berea, winning by scores of 23-2 and 14-1, with both games ending in a mercy rule after seven innings.
Game One
The Fightin' Engineers achieved their largest margin of victory this season as they mercy ruled the Mountaineers 23-2 in seven innings. Rose-Hulman's 23 runs are the most in a game since 2011 (26 runs against Bluffton) and are tied for the third most runs in a game in school history.
Rose-Hulman opened the game with five runs in the first inning, and they closed out the third with a 5-2 lead. The team would conclude the match with 18 unanswered runs, highlighted by nine runs atop the sixth inning and eight runs atop the seventh inning.
Jackson Summers,
Connor O'Connell,
Joe Nevle, and
Sam Erickson each scored three runs, with Summers and O'Connell recording three hits and two doubles. A total of seven Fightin' Engineers recorded two or more RBIs, including a game-high three RBIs from Erickson and
Issei Takahashi.
Rose-Hulman added two home runs in the sixth inning, as
Mason Rasmussen launched a two-RBI homer over the left field wall, while Erickson recorded a three-RBI home run out to right field.
The Fightin' Engineers outmatched Berea with 22 hits to eight, and they did not commit an error.
Brad Nardi secured the victory on the mound, where he struck out four batters across six innings of action.
Game Two
Rose-Hulman's success carried over into game two as they mercy ruled Berea once again by a score of 14-1 through seven innings. The Fightin' Engineers opened the game with a 5-1 lead through three innings, and they closed out the game with nine consecutive runs to sweep the series.
Summers had another phenomenal game, where he hit 4-5 with one double and one triple. He scored a career-high four runs while hitting three RBIs.
TJ Pipkins and
Jackson Harms each recorded two hits, two RBIs, and one double, while Pipkins also scored two runs.
O'Connell scored three runs once again, while adding one RBI.
Michael Hines and
Danny Jaso scored two runs for the Fightin' Engineers and
Noah Rasmussen added two RBIs.
Gavin Drooger picked up the victory on the mound, where he improves to 4-0 on the season. He recorded five strikeouts across 5.2 innings, allowing just one earned run.
The Fightin' Engineers will look to extend their win streak to four as they host the Manchester Spartans. The doubleheader will take place on Saturday, March 28, at 1 and 4 PM.
