Softball Sweeps Webster in Dominant Performance

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- The Rose-Hulman softball team picked up their first sweep of the season, defeating Webster University in a doubleheader with final scores of 10-2 and 11-0, with both contests ending after five innings. The two wins advance the Fightin' Engineers to 8-8 overall this season. 

In the first game, Rose-Hulman got off to a strong start against the Gorloks. A single by Kayla Schnippel brought in two runs by Aubrey Smith and Jessica Newsom in the bottom of the first inning. 

The Fightin' Engineers added another run after a single by Emily Hodges brought around a score from Rosie Travioli to extend their lead to 3-0. Smith hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the second that added to the Rose lead, making the score 6-0. 

After Webster scored in the third, Rose-Hulman answered after a single by Hodges brought in a run by Jadyn Winkler. The Fightin' Engineers added three more runs in the bottom of the fifth to end the game with a run-rule and a final score of 10-2. 

Smith earned the win in the circle, pitching the entire 5.0 innings with four strikeouts. Smith was also exceptional at the plate, going 2-3 with two runs and three RBIs. Hodges was another standout, finishing the game going 2-4 with two runs scored and two RBIs. Schnippel also made an impact, finishing 2-4 with four RBIs.

The team continued their momentum into the second game, continuing to shine offensively. 

Newsom got the team on the board with a two-run homer in the top of the first. Rose-Hulman scored four runs in the first by Hodges, Schnippel, Shearer, and Newsom to take an early lead. 

The Fightin' Engineers stayed hot at the plate, putting up five more runs by Newsom, Smith, Schnippel, Travioli, and Shearer in the bottom of the second to extend their advantage to 9-0.

Two more runs by Kate Minikey and Audrey Theuring in the bottom of the third sealed the win, as the team would defeat the Webster Gorloks after five innings with a score of 11-0. 

Theuring earned the shutout win in the circle, pitching the entire 5.0 innings with four strikeouts. Both Newsom and Schnippel finished the game perfect at 2-2 at the plate with two runs scored. 

Rose-Hulman will return to HCAC action on the road, facing Mount St. Joseph on Saturday, April 4, at 1 PM and 3 PM.
