MELBOURNE, Fla. -- The Rose-Hulman softball team split their doubleheader with a big win over Albright with a score of 2-0, and a competitive loss to Concordia Minnesota with a final score of 8-6 after eight innings. This advances the team to 3-3 overall on the season.
In the first game against Albright, both teams played extremely well defensively. The contest remained scoreless through five innings.
In the top of the sixth, Rose-Hulman broke the scoreless tie with a triple by
Abigale Shearer, scoring a run by
Megan Newton to give Rose the 1-0 lead.
The Fightin' Engineers extended the lead in the top of the seventh with a single by
Aubrey Smith, bringing in a run by
Lucille Pyrz.
Shearer led the team at the plate, finishing the day 2-3 with one RBI.
Aubrey Smith was the star in the circle with an incredible performance, pitching the entire 7.0 innings with three strikeouts in the shutout win.
In the second game against Concordia Minnesota, the team found themselves in a battle.
Jessica Newsom provided an early spark for the Fightin' Engineers with the team's first home run of the season with a bomb to right field in the bottom of the first that brought around a run by
Emily Hodges to give the team a 2-0 lead.
The Cobbers answered with four runs in the top of the second to jump in front, 4-2. Rose-Hulman regained the lead in the bottom of the third with three runs by Hodges, Newsom, and
Kayla Schnippel to stand ahead 5-4.
Concordia Minnesota tied the game with a run in the sixth inning to force the contest into extra innings. The Cobbers had a strong performance in the top of the eighth inning, putting up three runs to take a commanding lead.
Rose-Hulman scored, after a single by
Katelyn Sarvis brought in a run by Newton to make the score 8-6. The Cobbers would hold on to defeat the Fightin' Engineers, handing them their third loss of the season.
Newsom led the team at the plate, finishing 2-4 with two runs and two RBIs. Sarvis was another standout at the plate, ending the game 2-4 with two RBIs.
Kayla Schnippel suffered the loss in the circle with 6.0 innings pitched with one strikeout.
The Rose-Hulman softball team will return to action tomorrow, Thursday, March 5, against Anna Maria and Concordia Chicago at 12:15 PM and 2:30 PM.
