TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – The Fightin' Engineers split their double header against Mt. St. Joseph. Rose-Hulman won game one on a walk-off single by a score of 7-6, while the Lions took game two by a score of 6-3.
Game One
The Lions jumped out to an early lead as they scored five runs at the top of the second inning. Their run was highlighted by a two-RBI single from Jordan Harley and a two-RBI double from Ethan Mason.
Jackson Summers recorded a single on a bunt early in the third, where he was able to just beat out the throw to first. He would advance into scoring position, as
Issei Takahashi drew a walk in the next at bat. With two outs,
Connor O'Connell hit a stand-up double to left-center field, where he recorded an RBI as Summers scored Rose's opening run.
Mason Rasmussen would follow that up with an RBI single through the right side, bringing Takahashi home. M. Rasmussen would then steal second base, where the Lions committed a fielding error, resulting in O'Connell scoring to cut the lead to 5-3.
Following a pair of walks, the Lions were able to stretch their lead to 6-3 in the top of the fourth, on a sacrifice fly from Andrew Clements.
Shortly after subbing into the game,
Alex Powers forced a groundout to lead off the fifth before striking out consecutive batters who went down swinging. Powers finished the game with three strikeouts across 4.1 innings of action, where he gave up just one hit and zero runs.
Noah Rasmussen and
Sam Erickson each drew walks to start the bottom of the sixth inning. With two outs and a runner on third, Takahashi hit an RBI single through the right side, where N. Rasmussen's run made it a 6-4 game. With the bases loaded, O'Connell hit a slow roller to third base, where he successfully made it to first, picking up an RBI as Erickson made it home.
The Fightin' Engineers would find themselves down 6-5 entering the bottom of the ninth inning.
TJ Pipkins led off the inning, and he hit a stand-up triple on a deep fly ball to center field. Following N. Rasmussen being walked, Erickson smacked a line drive single that dropped right in front of the left fielder, bringing Pipkins home for the tying run.
With the bases loaded, Takahashi hit a walk-off RBI single out to left field on the very first pitch, where N. Rasmussen scored the game-winning run in a thrilling comeback victory. The Fightin' Engineers successfully overcame a five-run deficit, while ending the game on a 7-1 run to secure the win.
Game Two
Gavin Drooger would open game two with consecutive three-up three-down innings, where he struck out two batters who went down looking. He would finish the game with four strikeouts across six innings pitched.
The Lions jumped into an early 4-0 lead by the end of the fifth inning, which included a two-run homer in the top of the fourth.
Summers opened the bottom of the sixth with a line drive triple off the right-center field wall, where he slid into third to beat the tag. He would score Rose's first run on a Takahashi line drive single out to right field.
Mt. St. Joseph was able to extend the lead to 6-1, as they took advantage of a Rose-Hulman error before scoring on a sacrifice fly from Austin Buckle.
N. Rasmussen recorded a double off the right field wall late into the seventh, and
Joe Nevle would conclude the top of the eighth with a jumping catch on a line drive to second base. Nevle would be walked on four pitches to lead off the bottom of the eighth, before Summers added a single to left field.
Takahashi hit a single out to left field, where Nevle would score a run following a fielding error from the Lions. With Summers on third base, Pipkins hit a sacrifice fly to center field, where Summers' run cut the lead to 6-3.
Unfortunately for the Fightin' Engineers, the Lions were able to record three straight outs in the bottom of the ninth, splitting the doubleheader series with a score of 6-3.
The Fightin' Engineers will conclude their series with Mt. St. Joseph tomorrow, Sunday, April 12, for Senior Day. Prior to the game, Rose-Hulman will honor their five seniors in
Nicholas Douglas,
Warren Goik,
Connor O'Connell,
Tyler Orr, and
Mason Rasmussen.
