LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- The Rose-Hulman softball team split their road doubleheader on Thursday against the Spalding Golden Eagles. The team lost in game one with a score of 5-4 after eight innings, and bounced back to win game two with a score of 6-4. This moves the team to 11-13 overall this season.
The Fightin' Engineers found themselves in a competitive battle in the first game of the day. Rose took the lead in the top of the first inning after a double by
Aubrey Smith scored two runs by
Jessica Newsom and
Emily Hodges.
The game turned into a defensive battle after that, as both teams were held scoreless until the final frame. In the bottom of the seventh, Spalding was able to tie the score at 2-2 to send the game into extra innings.
Rose jumped back in front in the top of the eighth after a single by
Kayla Schnippel scored a run by Newsom.
Katelyn Sarvis hit a single to bring in a run by
Megan Newton to extend the Fightin' Engineers' lead to 4-2.
Spalding answered with a double that brought in two runs to tie the game in the bottom of the eighth. The Golden Eagles then hit a walk-off single to take the lead for good and defeat the Fightin' Engineers, 5-4.
Smith had a strong game in the circle, pitching the entire 7.2 innings with five strikeouts. Hodges led the team at the plate, going 2-3 with one run scored.
Rose-Hulman bounced back to defeat the Golden Eagles in the second game of the day.
The team got on the board first with two runs in the second inning, scored by
Abigale Shearer and Sarvis. Spalding answered with a run of their own in the bottom of the second to make the score 2-1.
Rose extended their lead after a single by Sarvis brought around a score by Smith to make the score 3-1. After a run by the Golden Eagles in the fourth, Rose-Hulman doubled their score with three more runs in the top of the fifth, scored by Smith, Schnippel, and Shearer.
Spalding added two more runs in the bottom of the sixth, but Rose-Hulman was able to hold on to secure the win in game two with a final score of 6-4.
Audrey Theuring led the team in the circle, earning the win by pitching the entire 7.0 innings with two strikeouts. Sarvis was the standout at the plate, finishing 2-3 with one run scored and two RBIs. Shearer was another impressive hitter, going 2-4 with two runs scored.
Rose-Hulman will return home to host Franklin in HCAC action on Friday, April 17, at 3:30 PM and 5:30 PM.
