TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- The Rose-Hulman softball team welcomed Transylvania to campus on Monday for an HCAC doubleheader. The team suffered two losses to the Pioneers with scores of 10-2 after five innings and 6-4. The losses drop Rose to 11-19 overall and 1-9 in the HCAC this season.
Transylvania had a strong start to game one, scoring four runs in the second inning to take the early lead. The Pioneers added six more runs in the top of the third to extend their advantage to 10-0.
Rose-Hulman avoided the shutout with a triple by
Emily Hodges, scoring a run by
Lucille Pyrz. Hodges was able to cross the plate for a score after a ground out by
Aubrey Smith to make the score 10-2.
This would be the final score as Transylvania held the Fightin' Engineers scoreless in the fourth and fifth innings to claim the run-rule victory. Smith represented Rose-Hulman in the circle with 5.0 innings pitched and five strikeouts.
Rose-Hulman looked to bounce back in the second game of the day. The Pioneers scored four runs in the first three innings to take the lead. Rose answered in the bottom of the third with a run by Pyrz and
Jessica Newsom to make the score 4-2.
The Fightin' Engineers battled back to tie the game after a double by
Abigale Shearer brought in two scores by
Jadyn Winkler and Smith to knot the score at 4-4. Transylvania put up two runs in the top of the seventh and relied on their defense to close out the game and complete the sweep over Rose-Hulman.
Smith was a standout at the plate in game two, finishing a perfect 2-2 at the plate with one run and one RBI. Shearer was another standout, going 2-3 with two RBIs.
Audrey Theuring suffered the loss in the circle with 7.0 innings pitched.
Rose-Hulman will continue their conference schedule, hosting Anderson on Wednesday, April 22, at 5:30 PM and 7:30 PM.
