TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- The Rose-Hulman softball team swept their doubleheader against the Hanover Panthers on Wednesday night, winning game one 6-4 and game two 4-3 after eight innings. The wins improve the team to 16-20 overall this season and 6-10 in the HCAC.
Rose-Hulman earned an exciting comeback victory in the first game of the day. Hanover got on the board first with four runs in the top of the first to build an intimidating lead.
Rose-Hulman chipped away with two runs in the bottom of the third inning.
Emily Hodges scored on a throwing error to get the Fightin' Engineers on the board. A single by
Jadyn Winkler brought in a run by
Jessica Newsom to make the score 4-2.
The Fightin' Engineers tied the game in the bottom of the fourth with runs scored by
Caledonia Coleman and
Rosie Travioli. Rose took the lead in the bottom of the fifth after a hit by Coleman scored a run by
Katelyn Sarvis to put the team ahead 5-4.
Rose-Hulman sealed the win with a solo home run by Newsom to defeat the Panthers with a final score of 6-4.
Newsom was incredible, going a perfect 4-4 at the plate wth two runs scored and two RBIs.
Katelyn Sarvis was another standout at the dish, finishing 2-3 with one run scored.
Audrey Theuring earned the win in the circle, pitching the entire 7.0 innings with three strikeouts.
The second game of the day was an absolute thriller. Rose-Hulman scored first after a single by Winkler brought in a run by Hodges. The team added to their lead after a single by
Lucille Pyrz scored a run by Travioli to make the score 2-0 in the bottom of the second.
Hanover answered with a late-game comeback to tie the score with two runs across the sixth and seventh innings. The score was tied 2-2 as the contest headed to extra innings.
The Panthers put the pressure on the Fightin' Engineers, scoring a run in the top of the eighth to make the score 3-2. Rose-Hulman rose to the occasion, tying the game on a single by
Kyra Tucker that brought around a run by
Abigale Shearer, making it 3-3.
Hodges hit a walk-off single to score the game-winning run by Tucker, completing the doubleheader sweep with a final score of 4-3 in game two.
Hodges was the hero in game two, finishing the game going 3-5 at the plate with one run and one RBI. Tucker was another clutch hitter for Rose, going 3-4 with one run and one RBI.
Aubrey Smith was exceptional in the circle, pitching the entire 8.0 innings with three strikeouts while only allowing two earned runs.
With the sweep, Rose-Hulman keeps their HCAC Tournament hopes alive. The team will have to pick up a sweep against Bluffton on the road this Saturday, May 2, at 3 PM and 5 PM. The team will also need Anderson and Manchester to lose out to sneak into the HCAC Tournament as the #6 seed.
