TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – The Rose-Hulman athletic department will be featuring multiple student-athletes across all of their varsity sports teams this summer in the Fightin' Engineers to Watch media campaign.
Women's tennis's Fightin' Engineer to Watch is
Addie Patterson as she enters her junior season.
Patterson played a key role in Rose-Hulman claiming the 2025-26 HCAC Tournament Championship, winning the title for the first time in ten years. She has recorded 16 career wins at No. 1 doubles, highlighted by a 7-5 win against Hanover in the HCAC Semifinals. That win would give Rose-Hulman the point in doubles, and they would go on to win 4-3 to advance to the HCAC Championship.
When Patterson arrived at Rose-Hulman during the 2024-25 season, the roster consisted of three returning players and nine freshmen. "From day one, the Rose-Hulman women's tennis team has enjoyed each other's company, and it was truly remarkable to see a team as young as ours make a mark in the HCAC, all while smiling," said Patterson. "This season, I want to focus on improving my singles play and becoming more patient while getting better at creating opportunities. In doubles, I am working to become more explosive and aggressive while playing at the net, so I can finish points earlier."
Patterson is pursuing degrees in computer engineering and mechanical engineering, as well as a master's in engineering management. This summer, she is working at Michigan's Adventure as an Attractions and Facilities Maintenance/Engineering Intern. Her role is to be a first responder when a ride goes down, as well as working with a team of interns to develop a new show control system for the tunnel of their wooden coaster, Wolverine Wildcat. "I truly feel blessed to be in a role that gives us so much freedom without limiting our creativity," said Patterson. "All the managers and executives have been so welcoming and helpful, and we are treated just like all the other employees."
During the 2024-25 season, Patterson was named an All-HCAC Honorable Mention. She recorded seven wins at No. 1 doubles, while adding a record of 9-3 at No. 4 singles with a perfect 6-0 singles record against HCAC opponents.
"Playing a sport at Rose has definitely been an outlet for me on a lot of rough days. Thanks to the girls on my team, I know that whenever I go to practice, I'll always have a reason to laugh," said Patterson. "Being a student-athlete has helped me become a more well-rounded person, as I am able to balance engineering, tennis, and leadership roles, while effectively working through challenges and communicating with others. These skills have made me a better engineer as well as a better teammate."
The Fightin' Engineers will lead off the 2026-27 season at the DePauw Invitational on Saturday, September 5 at a time that is yet to be determined.
