Volleyball Falls to Ohio Wesleyan in Five-Set Thriller

DELAWARE, Ohio -- The Rose-Hulman women's volleyball team faced Ohio Wesleyan on Friday night to begin the Ohio Wesleyan Tournament. The Fightin' Engineers fell short to the Battling Bishops after five sets with scores of 19-25, 25-21, 14-25, 25-19, and 11-15.

Emma Blanton was exceptional with a team-high 16 kills. Blanton also made a difference on defense with eight digs. Keira Ohse, Hannah Bergfeld, and Kaia Schroeder all followed Blanton with seven kills each in the match.

Julia Irmen was the star setter on the night, recording a double-double with a team-high 27 assists and 13 digs.

Ohio Wesleyan started the match, jumping to a commanding lead. The team stood ahead 22-10 before the Fightin' Engineers mounted a comeback. Rose-Hulman rattled off six straight points to steal the momentum. The team battled back to cut the deficit to 24-19 before Ohio Wesleyan was able to end the set with a kill to take the one-set lead.

In the second set, the score stood tied 13-13. The Fightin' Engineers put together a 9-4 run to jump ahead with a score of 22-17. Rose was able to claim the set win after a kill by Bergfeld and an attack error by the Battling Bishops, 25-21.

After a decisive win by Ohio Wesleyan in the third set with a score of 25-14, Rose-Hulman needed a win to keep their chances alive. With the set tied 16-16, Rose-Hulman put together a 9-3 run to claim the win, 25-19, and force a fifth set.

In the final set, Ohio Wesleyan took an early 2-0 lead. Rose-Hulman battled the entire set but was unable to take the lead and suffered the loss to the Battling Bishops with a final score of 15-11.

Rose-Hulman volleyball will continue the Ohio Wesleyan Tournament on Saturday, September 19, facing Heidelberg and Kalamazoo at 10 AM and 12:30 PM.
