Volleyball Battles but Falls at Trine

ANGOLA, IND. -- Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology stands 2-4 on the volleyball season after falling in five sets to Olivet and three sets to Trine on Tuesday night.

In the opener against Olivet College, the Comets rallied from a 2-1 deficit to capture sets four and five and hand the Engineers a narrow loss. 

Rose-Hulman captured the opening set 25-19, before Olivet rallied with a 25-14 win in set two.  The Fightin' Engineers took the lead with a 25-23 victory, but Olivet rallied to win 16-14 and 15-8 in the final two sets.

Rose-Hulman battled Trine in three tight sets in the nightcap before falling 25-20, 25-22, 25-22. 

Against Olivet, sophomore Sarah Jensen (Overland Park, Kan./Blue Valley Northwest) (pictured) smashed 15 kills to lead the Rose-Hulman offense.  Freshman Claire Raycraft (Decatur, Ill./St. Teresa) added eight kills.

Freshman Morgan Dreyer (Batesville) tallied a match-high 29 assists, with seniors Kate Dangel (Upper Arlington, Ohio) and Casey Levitt (Thousand Oaks, Calif./Westlake) recording 18 and 16 digs. 

Levitt added seven aces to the Engineer effort, with Dreyer contributing six kills and 13 digs. 

Jensen had seven kills, and Dreyer added team-best totals of 16 assists and two aces against Trine.   Defensively, Jensen recorded 11 digs, Dangel had 10 and senior Catherine Fiutem (Harrison, Ohio/Oldenburg Academy) tallied a team-high three blocks.

The Fightin' Engineers will host five matches this weekend.  Greenville College comes to Hulbert Arena on Friday at 6 p.m., with the Rose-Hulman Invitational scheduled for Saturday and Sunday.
