TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – The Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology women's soccer team avenged last season's draw, defeating St. Mary-of-the-Woods College 5-0 Wednesday, Oct. 1 at the Intramural Field.
Rose-Hulman, which came into the contest with a 5-2 record, scored three goals in the first 15 minutes to put the game out of reach. Freshman Eliska Saiz opened the scoring in the fifth minute breaking through the Pomeroy defense to score her third goal of the season. Freshman Madeline Romeo scored her first goal of the season in the eighth minute on a rebound to give Rose-Hulman a 2-0 lead.
Junior Hayley Gilliam scored Rose-Hulman's third and fifth goal, bringing her total to three goals scored on the season. Fellow junior Kate DeMoss scored on a penalty kick in the 73rd minute.
Rose-Hulman outshot St. Mary-of-the-Woods 18-10 in the contest. Junior goalkeeper Lucinda Combs was credited with five saves and earned her 25th career shutout.
Three different Pomeroys fired two shots in the contest with Kylee White putting both of her shots on net.
With the victory, Rose-Hulman finishes its non-conference schedule with a 6-2 record while St. Mary-of-the-Woods dips to 2-8. The Engineers will open up Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) play Saturday at Defiance. The game is slated to begin at 1 p.m.
