DEFIANCE, Ohio - Fresh off of a victory over St. Mary-of-the-Woods last Wednesday, the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology women's soccer team opened Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) play with a 1-0 victory at Defiance Saturday, Oct. 4.
Freshman Madeline Romeo scored the game's only goal in the 33rd minute on a shot from the top of the box, courtesy of a pass from junior Helena Bomber. Junior goalkeeper Lucinda Combs collected two saves while earning her 7th shutout of the season as well as the 26th of her career.
Rose-Hulman outshot Defiance 11-4 in the contest including 8-1 in the first half. In addition, the Fightin' Engineers hit the post three times in the first half. Senior Haley O'Neil fired six of the Engineers' shots. Both teams took three corner kicks.
"Our team played well and we got the result we needed," head coach Amy Helliwell said. "The wind played a factor in the game, and we were against the wind in the second half."
Rose-Hulman returns to action Tuesday, Oct. 7, when the Engineers travel to Mount St. Joseph. The game is slated to begin at 7:30 p.m.
