TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – The Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology women's soccer team did something it had not done since 2007 – defeat Transylvania University. The Fightin' Engineers defeated the Pioneers 2-1 on the Intramural Field Saturday, Oct. 11.
Rose-Hulman, which came into the contest ranked No. 10 in the NCAA III Great Lakes Region, got on the board early as freshman Eliska Saiz used a cross from freshman Madeline Romeo to score her fourth goal of the season in ninth minute of the game.
The Engineers would extend their lead in the 58th minute when a corner kick from junior Hayley Gilliam found the foot of Romeo. The Woodland Hills, Calif., native volleyed home her third goal of the season beat Transylvania goalkeeper Morgan Potts from six yards out.
The Pioneers would add a goal in the 86th minute, but the Engineer defense would hold for the victory.
Transylvania held a slight 10-9 edge in shots while both teams took four corner kicks. Junior goalkeeper Lucinda Combs faced eight shots on goal and saved seven of them raising her season save total to 68.
The victory over Transylvania marks the first victory for head coach Amy Helliwell over the Pioneers.
With the win, Rose-Hulman improves to 8-3 on the season including a 2-1 mark in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) play. The Engineers return to action Tuesday, Oct. 14 for another HCAC contest at Franklin. The game is slated to begin at 7 p.m.
