TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Strong defense led the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology volleyball team to a straight-set victory over Transylvania 25-21, 26-24, 25-22 in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) play Saturday, Oct. 18.
The Fightin' Engineers totaled 10 team blocks en route to holding the Pioneers to a mere .101 attack percentage. Rose-Hulman committed just 10 attack errors while Transylvania had 28.
Transylvania's Erin Rometo led both teams with 22 kills and 12 errors on 62 attack attempts. The Engineers, on the other hand, used a balanced offensive effort with sophomores Morgan Dreyer and Emily McLendon tallying seven kills while senior Briana Harvey and junior Sarah Jensen each had six kills.
Defensively, freshman Gabi Razma, who came into the match ranked fifth in the nation in total digs, turned in a 27 digs performance. McLendon led the way blocking with six blocks assists. Dreyer, Harvey, and sophomore Mackenzie Gossard each had four block assists.
Rose-Hulman improves to 12-14 overall including a 3-2 mark in HCAC play while Transylvania dips to 6-16 overall and 2-5 in HCAC play. The Engineers currently sit in fifth place in the HCAC, with the top six teams making the conference tournament at season's end. The victory for Rose-Hulman over Transylvania snapped a 3-game losing streak to the Pioneers
Rose-Hulman returns to action on Wednesday, Oct. 22, for a 7 p.m. contest against Earlham.
