TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - The Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology men's soccer team clinched a bid to the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Tournament with a 1-0 victory over Anderson University on Wednesday evening at the Intramural Field.
The victory ensures the Fightin' Engineers of a top-two finish in the conference, giving Rose-Hulman a home game for the HCAC Tournament semifinals to be played next week Wednesday at 7 p.m. The opponent will be determined following the completion of league play on Saturday.
Rose-Hulman secured its fourth consecutive top-two finish in the HCAC regular season with the victory and will host a conference tournament game for the fourth straight year.
Sophomore Nick Kowalkowski scored the lone goal of the match in the 22nd minute, courtesy of an assist from junior Dieter Schultz. The score came directly off the corner kick and marked Schultz's team-high sixth assist.
The Fightin' Engineers outshot the Ravens 16-11 in the contest, led by six shots from sophomore Ben Lyon and three from junior Brian Ruane. Todd Canal paced Anderson with seven shots.
Senior Drew Miller continued to tack onto his school records with his 46th career victory and 33rd career shutout as goalkeeper. Miller had six saves in the victory.
Early in the second half, Rose-Hulman had two excellent chances for an insurance goal. Lyon had a breakaway chance in the 48th minute that was saved by Nathan Wadley. One minute later, Ruane narrowly missed a shot over the net.
Rose-Hulman improved to 11-4-3 overall and 6-1-1 in league play, while Anderson dropped to 10-7-1 and 4-3-1 in conference matches. The Fightin' Engineers host Bluffton University for Senior Day on Saturday at 2:30 p.m.
