TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - The Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology men's soccer team clinched a share of the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) regular season championships with a 3-1 victory over Bluffton University Saturday, Nov. 1.
The Fightin' Engineers nearly scored early in the 38th minute when Rose-Hulman was awarded a penalty kick. Freshman Turner Perkins fired a shot that rattled off of the crossbar. The header that ensured sailed over the net.
Rose-Hulman broke the deadlock 91 seconds before halftime when a Bluffton defender accidently cleared the ball into his own net. The Engineers, who outshot Bluffton 7-0 in the first half, took the 1-0 lead into halftime.
Junior Dieter Schultz gave Rose-Hulman a 2-0 lead in the 65th minute by scoring his second goal of the season. The Beavers got within a goal in the 81st minute, but an Austin Webb goal in the 87th minute sealed the victory for the Engineers.
Rose-Hulman outshot Bluffton 16-4 in the contest. The Engineers also held a 4-1 advantage in corner kicks.
"We played much better in the second half," head coach Sean Helliwell said. "To finish at the top of the league is a great acheivement for our guys. It will be a tough game whoever we play."
The Engineers share the HCAC regular season title with Transylvania, similar to the 2012 season. Rose-Hulman earns the No. 2 seed in HCAC Tournament and will host Franklin College at 7 p.m. on Wednesday.
