TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology clinched a bid to the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Women's Soccer Tournament with a 2-1 victory over Anderson University on Wednesday night at the Intramural Field.
The Fightin' Engineers secured the No. 3 seed for next week's four-team tournament and will open play on Tuesday. Rose-Hulman will travel to the No. 2 seed for a semifinal match at a time to be announced. The champion will earn an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament later this month.
Rose-Hulman relied on two corner kick goals to earn the victory. Junior Kate DeMoss scored the first goal of the match in the seventh minute, off a corner kick from junior Hayley Gilliam. The score was the fourth goal of the season for DeMoss.
Anderson knotted the score at 1-1 at the intermission on an unassisted goal by Beverly Brittingham at 22:00. The Ravens held a 9-8 edge on shots in the first half.
Rose-Hulman scored the lone goal of the second half off another Gilliam corner kick. This time freshman Madeline Romeo sent a pass to freshman forward Eliska Saiz in the box. Saiz put home her fifth goal of the season in the 57th minute for the game winner.
Junior Lucinda Combs picked up her 30th career win as a goalkeeper at Rose-Hulman with eight saves in the match. The Fightin' Engineers narrowly outshot Anderson 18-17 and held a 5-1 edge in corner kicks.
Rose-Hulman improved to 11-4-1 on the season and 5-2-1 in league play, while Anderson dropped to 7-8-2 overall and 2-4-2 in conference games. The Fightin' Engineers look to tie their second most single-season wins in school history during Saturday's Senior Day matchup with Bluffton University.
