DEFIANCE, Ohio – The Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology men's soccer team opened Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) play with a 2-1 victory at Defiance.
Sophomore defender Nick Kowalkowski scored his first goal of the season in the 21st minute on a pass from junior Dieter Schultz. The Engineers took the 1-0 lead into halftime.
Rose-Hulman outshot Defiance 4-1 in the first half including a 9-5 advantage over the entire game. The Engineers also earned four corner kicks, three of which were in the first half, compared to zero for Defiance.
The Yellow Jackets leveled the game in the 51st minute, but Rose-Hulman responded with a penalty kick, game-winning goal from freshman Turner Perkins in the 69th minute.
"Every conference game is tough, and we are relieved to get a victory away from home," head coach Sean Helliwell said. "We look forward to another tough game at Mount St. Joseph Wednesday night."
Rose-Hulman improves to 9-0 all-time against Defiance. With the win, the Engineers snap a three-game losing skid and now stands at 6-3-2. The game Coach Helliwell speaks of is slated to begin at 7:30 p.m. on Oct. 8.
