TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology advanced to the championship game of the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Men's Soccer Tournament with a 2-0 victory over Franklin College on Wednesday night at the Engineer Intramural Field.
Sophomore Ben Lyon put the Engineers on the board in the 44th minute, scoring off a deflected play inside the Franklin box. The Engineers outshot Franklin 9-3 in the opening half.
In the second half, both teams fired seven shots and the Grizzlies had one scoring chance with 10 minutes remaining. Rose-Hulman added an insurance goal in the final minute, as freshman Austin Webb booted a shot off the crossbar, then scored on the rebound.
Senior Drew Miller recorded his school record 34th career shutout with four saves to advance Rose-Hulman into the HCAC title game for the second consecutive year. Junior Dieter Schultz led the offensive effort with seven shots as the Engineers outshot Franklin 16-10.
Rose-Hulman will travel to Transylvania University for the conference championship game on Saturday at 1 p.m., with the winner earning an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament.
