CLEVELAND, Ohio -- SUNY Geneseo relied on preseason All-American Gordon Lyons and a balanced scoring attack to top Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology 73-57 in the consolation game of the Case Western Reserve University Men's Basketball Tipoff Tournament on Saturday.
Lyons led four SUNY Geneseo players in double figures with 23 points and 15 rebounds for a team that joined Rose-Hulman as a qualifier for the 2014 NCAA Division III Tournament. Kevin Crockett added 17 points, Andy Drescher scored 16 and James McKenna had 12 for Geneseo.
Rose-Hulman placed two players in double figures, with senior Corey Povaleri joining sophomore Collin Wojcik with 12 points each. Porvaleri had two steals and two rebounds, while Wojcik finished 5-9 from the field with two three-pointers and four rebounds.
Sophomore Matt Loesing contributed eight points and a career-high 10 rebounds to the effort, and sophomore Dillon Reynolds came off the bench for a career-high seven points for the Fightin' Engineers.
Povaleri earned a spot on the Case Western Reserve all-tournament team for his performance on the weekend that included two double-figure scoring efforts.
SUNY Geneseo jumped out to an 11-point halftime lead and pushed the lead as high as 19 points at 49-30 with 15:25 remaining. Rose-Hulman stormed back with an 11-0 run, featuring a three-pointer by Wojcik and four straight points from Povaleri, to move within 49-41 at the 11:44 mark.
SUNY Geneseo responded with 10 straight points of its own to secure the victory. The winners finished 21-7 last season and qualified for the NCAA Tournament as an at-large recipient.
Rose-Hulman dropped to 0-2 on the season and returns to action at in-state rival DePauw University on Tuesday at 8 p.m.
