COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - A field goal from Iowa Wesleyan with 13 seconds remaining sealed Rose-Hulman's fate in a 49-48 loss Saturday, Nov. 29.
Rose Hulman (3-2) got off to a fast start as a three pointer from sophomore Kristen Belyea gave the Fightin' Engineers a 16-4 lead with 14:15 to play in the first half. Two free throws from sophomore Josie Schmidt four minutes later gave Rose-Hulman its largest advantage (21-9).
Iowa Wesleyan ended the half on a 18-6 run to tie the game at 27-27 heading into the second half.
Rose-Hulman connected on four free throws to begin the second half. After several tied scores, the Tigers took their first lead of the game with 7:39 to play (39-38).
Trailing 47-43, senior Gracie Gibbs hit two free throws and junior Cassidy Cain nailed a three pointer to give the Engineers a 48-47 lead with 2:33 to play.
After Iowa Wesleyan took a 49-48 lead, a jumper from sophomore Abbie Marshall was off target in the final seconds to give the Engineers their first loss in four contests.
Belyea led Rose-Hulman offensively with a season-high 12 points. Gibbs added eight points and nine rebounds while Schmidt and sophomore Jamie Loving each chipped in six points.
As a team, the Engineer shot 31.8 percent (14-44) from the field while Iowa Wesleyan shot 35.3 percent (18-51). Rose-Hulman held a distinct advantage in free throw shooting, hitting 13-14 while the Tigers converted just 6-11 from the charity stripe.
Rose-Hulman dips to 3-2 with the loss at returns to action Wednesday, Dec. 3. The Engineers make the short trip to West Terre Haute for a 7 p.m. game against crosstown rival St. Mary-of-the-Woods College.
